THE LIST – LISTEN: This ye∑®s festiv∑l
moreTHE LIST – LISTEN
I love lists; I’m helpless without them. Shopping lists, to-do lists, play lists, best-of lists, wish lists; all of them play an important role in my life, so much so that I would say that – though this may sound like an over-the-top nerdy fetish – a list can be an excellent source of existential insight.
When the German magazine Der Speigel once interviewed Umberto Eco about the significance of lists, he gave the following answer: “The list is the origin of culture. It’s part of the history of art and literature. What does culture want? To make infinity comprehensible. It also wants to create order – not always, but often. And how, as a human being, does one face infinity? How does one attempt to grasp the incomprehensible? Through lists, through catalogues, through collections in museums and through encyclopedias and dictionaries.”
The freethinker and novelist Denis Diderot and the mathematician Jean le Rond d’Alembert were the editors of what must perhaps be called the list of all lists: the Encyclopedia, the great, French reference work that took shape in Paris in the mid-1700s. Their goal was an ambitious one: to gather the world and all its knowledge into one single, comprehensive encyclopedia. Literary scholar Anne Beate Maurseth, who wrote a doctoral thesis on the Encyclopedia, says: “You could say that the Encyclopedia anticipated IT technology, because every entry points to other words and articles. People would read the work in the same way that we acquire knowledge on the internet today: by clicking our way around and combining textual elements in new and perhaps unexpected contexts.”
The same often applies for me when I listen to music. I let my thoughts float around and constantly discover new and often unexpected connections. This has also been how we have thought when putting together the programme for this year’s Ultima festival. Where or how the connections arise is difficult to foresee; whether it is in the intervals, between the concerts, at the fragile, acoustical micro level in a newly composed and never before performed piece, in a brutal, musical collision, or somewhere totally different. Nor is it important. What is important is that we listen, because by listening we maintain an open mind. And that is absolutely, absolutely necessary.
Welcome to Ultima in September!

ULTIMA ACADEMY 2013 (5. – 14.9)
To know more about the music we hear makes us curious and opens our ears to new experiences. Behind every artistic production there lies many different forms of practical and theoretical knowledge. Ultima Academy is the place where the connection between them become visible and new links arise.
It is an international symposium that takes place during Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, with a program of lectures, seminars, workshops and debates that offer participants new insight into some of Ultima´s most representative productions. It is a centre in which music enthusiasts, composers, musicologists, musicians, music researchers, artists, students and scholars from related art forms gather and discuss.
Contemporary music is a complex field in constant transformation: increasingly, new media and other art forms are integrated into its musical practice, changing the way we make music, the way we perceive it and how we talk about it. This year´s program is about music theatre and instrument design. About new ideas that shape new forms that need new tools.

∑bout Ultima is Scandinavia’s largest contemporary music festival, and since 1991 it has been a key arena for contemporary music and related art forms. The festival became a designated “knutepunkt” (cultural hub) in 2006 and is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs and Oslo City Council. Ultima is a foundation with 18 members, all of them professional cultural institutions or organisations. The festival takes place during September and is staged at venues all around Oslo. Throughout its twenty-year history, all kinds of locations have served as Ultima concert venues. Our events are staged both in large, established venues such as the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, Oslo Concert Hall and the University of Oslo’s Great Hall as well as in small clubs, shop premises, industrial premises, museums, schools and outdoors. The Ultima Festival aims to promote artistic distinctiveness, trends and innovation and to make music of a high artistic standard accessible by everyone.
