Carola Bauckholt

Carola Bauckholt (b. 1959) is a German composer, publisher and intermedia artist. She studied with Mauricio Kagel at the Academy of Music in Köln, between 1978 and 1984, and she is still living there. In 1985, Bauckholt participated in the founding of the publishing house for books and music Thürmchen Verlag. From this point of departure, the Thürmchen Ensemble was founded in 1991, also with an active participation of Bauckholt.

Bauckholdt has been noticed for her ability to abstract the sounds and noise from daily life into an instrumental language. Manfred Karallus elaborates on this in the influential magazine MusikTexte: ”There are few musicians in the generations after Nono and Lachenmann who consider aesthetic activity not only as art phenomena, but as expressions of an universal way of relating to the world. Reflection precedes every score (...) and ”sensation and understanding” is in the very centre of the work”. A common feature in both Luigi Nono the Italian and Helmut Lachenmann the German is that they are concerned with producing sound not only for the sake of sound, but also in order to describe a specific situation.
