Bryn Harrison
The Briton Bryn Harrison (b. 1969) studied composition at the De Montfort University in Leicester and took a master’s degree in music at the Leeds College of Music. In 2000, the Guardian compared Harrison to the American composer Morton Feldman based on the work Ground for ensemble performed by the British ensemble Ixion. The newspaper is not alone on having made this comparison. The two composers also share an interest for painting – Harrison researches music and visual studies at the University of Huddersfield, whereas Feldman at several occasions let himself be inspired by abstract expressions in paintings. In the last four years, Harrison has collaborated with the painter Mike Walker, resulting in one new piece and two separate exhibitions.
Harrison wrote pieces for famous ensembles such as Ensemble Recherche and London Sinfonietta, and he has also written for the Norwegian asamisimasa. The percussionist Håkon Stene, also a member of asamisimasa, will perform the work of Harrison, five miniatures in three parts (2008) on Wednesday 16. September.
