Dausteg
Dausteg might be the most unexpected musical happening in Oslo this fall. Norwegian visual artist and musician Are Mokkelbost tells about his vigorous relationship with his colleague in Dausteg, Briton-Jamaican DJ, musician and journalist Tony Wilson:
– When we met, we soon realized that we shared quite a lot of musical preferences on experimental branches of early electronic music, hip hop, metal, contemporary music and impro-jazz. His blind spot was metal, whereas mine was hip hop. But almost without exception, we chose the same tracks from the same albums. Then a thought sprang forth: Why not continue playing songs for each other, but for other people as well?
As solo DJ, Mokkelbost at times faced sputters and showers of red wine. When the more experienced DJ Wilson joined in at the record table, things fell into place. – When we played at Club Øya last year, people danced to Giacinto Scelsi, Morton Feldman and Gyorgy Ligeti! It is interesting to watch when classic avant-garde is brought down to the functional and pragmatical level of the dance floor.
Dausteg has gathered a select group of artists they consider have managed to expand their genres in their bedroom compositions: The self-trained metal guitarist Mick Barr, the British duo Mount Kimbie consisting of two kids from England making instrumental hip hop and the Norwegian hip hop-collective Tri-Function Million, a crowd that also has nurtured their own kind of hybrid of black metal and noise.
