Mix sounds from Ultima

During the Ultima festival in 2009, the Drivhuset sampling team recorded sounds from various Ultima venues. Make your own Ultima sound mix on Ultimaskinen. For the 2009 festival, Ultima has offered composer workshops for schools in association with Drivhuset and the Norwegian Museum for Science and Technology. The workshops took place in the exhibition «Musikkmaskiner» (Music Machines).

The students have followed the development from the first automatic and mechanical musical instruments to present electronica and computer-based music, guided by museum staff. In the activity rooms and the data lab, musicians Bjarne Kvinnsland and Jon Halvor Bjørnseth from Drivhuset assists the students in making new compositions that shortly after are played live on the exhibition stage. The participants use theremin (the classical «air synthesizer»), programmable music boxes, the DSP program developed by Notam and a new mixing program with historical sound snippets from the exhibition.

In addition, Drivhuset has developed Ultimaskinen, an online composing device where you can make Ultima sound clips into your own compositions.
