9 Evenings was a legendary art event that originally took place in New York in October 1966, attended by more than 10,000 people. Curated by engineers Billy Klüver and Fred Waldhauer and artists Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman, this series of performances initiated a new era in which artists began to use technology to create rich and imaginative works.
As a result the founders launched Experiments in Art and Technology (EAT), an organisation remembered today for its pioneering role in the interface between art and technology. EAT continues today, and for this penetrating talk, the current director, Julie Martin, who joined EAT in 1967, will be discussing the group’s achievements past and present.

During this conversation Martin will be joined by Danish audio visual artist Jacob Kirkegaard, whose Testimonium installation opens during Ultima. Kirkegaard’s new TOPOS artist collective and record label have an ongoing collaboration with Martin and will be releasing an audio recording on vinyl of John Cage’s Variations VII that took place during the original 9 Evenings event. An essential talk for anyone interested in the historical connections between avant garde art, sound and technology.

The lecture and conversation is in English. Produced by Kunstnernes Hus.
