Maja S. K. Ratkje & Kathy Hinde: Aeolian
Andreas Borregaard – accordion
Red Note Ensemble
Maja S. K. Ratkje and Kathy Hinde´s exquisite collaboration draws its life from the ‘breath’ of the accordion (played by Danish virtuoso Andreas Borregaard), as well as incorporating a variety of newly invented wind-driven instruments. Aeolian harps were the wind-played harps of classical antiquity, and these air-activated sculptures were designed by sound sculptor and ‘ecosophist’ Kathy Hinde. Her custom built bellows, fans, snaking tubes and concertinas – are operated by the musicians during the performance, blending with more conventional instruments.
The Scottish Red Note Ensemble premiered the 30 minute Aeolian performance at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in 2017, where the piece was rapturously described as ‘an exquisitely-designed and executed ballet of action and sound, like a tender exquisite lullaby.’ Aeolian is a timely and entertaining reminder of the natural forces that lie behind music.
Lasts 30 minutes and will be presented twice. After each concert the wind instruments can be experienced as an installation.
