Formed by three experimental musicians in Cairo in 2012, Dwarfs of East Agouza build a repetitive and hypnotic music by disciplined improvising over exotic percussion loops. The Dwarfs are Maurice Louca (keyboards and electronics), Sam Shalabi (electric guitar/synth) and Alan Bishop (guitar, sax, vocals), and their long form jams hover somewhere between krautrock, post-rock and 70s electric Afro-beat. Alan Bishop is a former member of the cult US avant rock group Sun City Girls and more recently founded the Sublime Frequencies label. Canadian Sam Shalabi’s Middle Eastern-influenced group Shalabi Effect has released several albums on the Alien8 label. Egyptian Maurice Louca has worked for many years in the Cairo musical underground. Together they are revitalizing the sound of North African music.
This opening night afterparty takes place at SALT, a nomadic art project currently situated on Oslo’s shoreline. SALT’s spectacular wooden constructions cover a total of 5000 square metres, and include the Árdna sauna. Árdna is a Sami concept meaning ‘hidden treasure’ – a space for some slow and quiet time. Tonight’s mesmerising North African psychedelia is buried treasure indeed.
DJ: Jesper Lind.
(NB: The sauna venue will be warm, but not super-hot. Light clothing recommended!)
