In Ballerina, Norwegian composer Synne Skouen conducts us inside the private world of Malin, a teenage girl with autism. There you will find the deep pond and the big bird, the circus horse, Herr Carl the eucalyptus, Uncle Anton the creaky gate, and Mrs Ludovica the millstone. All of them have ‘blue voices’.

Synne Skouen’s new chamber opera is based on a play of the same name written by her father, Arne Skouen, in 1976. It has been adapated as an opera libretto by Oda Radoor. Amid the difficult dramas of a crisis-racked family, which includes her former ballerina mother Edith, Malin’s inner life is expressed via music.

Synne Skouen is one of Norway’s foremost contemporary composrs. Her most mportnat works include the ballet Volven, premiered by hte National Ballet in 1989, choreographed by Kjersti Alveberg. Skouen has been commissioned by Festspillene i Nord-Norge, Festspillene i Bergen, Oslo Chamber Music Festival, Oslo Grieg Festival, nyMusikk, Den Norske Opera, and has written works for television, radio, theatre and film.

What does it mean to be different? How does having an unusual child affect a family? And how to make an opera with all this as its subject matter?

Here’s a chance to get to know the new opera Ballerina and the person behind it. In collaboration with Ultima Academy, Den Norske Opera & Ballett present a conversation, before the world premiere, with composer Synne Skouen, librettist Oda Radoor, director Hilde Andersen and mezzosoprano Hege Høisæter. Audio and visual excerpts will also be played. The conversation forms part of the Opera Open Day, and is led by Hedda Høgåsen-Hallesby.
