Trevor Mathison transforms Atelier Nord into an immersive space where the history of the building soaks into the sonic experience. Concerned with themes such as colonialism, ethnicity and diaspora, and with the way the past imprints itself on objects and places, the British artist and musician uses archival fragments to create haunting aural landscapes whose source material is extracted from a building’s internal vibrations and systems, using sound processing and contact mics.
Hailed as one of most powerful sound installations of recent years, From Signal To Decay consists of kinetic sculptures made from tape loops and a speaker cone hanging from the ceiling; and a video shot in the Scottish landscape. An organic soundscape permeates the rest of the space, channelled into the building from an external microphone. You and your ears become a mobile mixing desk, as the sound balance changes as you move around the space.
Open every day during Ultima. Until 15/10.

Ultima’s focus on the work of Trevor Mathison also includes a film programme developed in partnership with Cinemateket/ Filmens Hus.
Trevor Mathison has been a legend since the 1980s. I have known him as the resident composer of the Black Audio Film Collective, whose creative documentaries made me attentive to the black-British and post-colonial experience in Britain. His work as a sound artist is really starting to come into focus with this solo project. It’s fantastic that he has chosen to continue the work in Oslo. Don’t miss it while it’s here.
As you walk into the gallery the whole space seems to be vibrating. Sound comes from all around you and changes as you walk around looking at the different films and objects. Somewhere in the mix you can also detect faint conversations and rumbling trams from the street outside. I recommend spending some time with this immersive sound installation.
