Maia Urstad’s sound installation FERD drops you into the sonic landscape of a bustling train station.
Maia Urstad: FERD (2022, WP)
Train communications are mixed with fragments of conversations between travellers, amplified announcements and electronic signals. This sonic environment feels like a space between dream and waking, reflecting long hours spent on trains. The station itself seems to exist in an unspecified time and place, as if Urstad has blended all the world’s railway stations into one.
With FERD, Norwegian sound artist Urstad continues her fascination with the various historical technologies that have allowed travel and communication over long distances, such as the telegraph and radio. She is especially interested in those moments when a certain technology is about to go out of date.
