At this freelate-night concert in Oslo domkirke, the audience can wander around the church while the powerful organ music of the late composer and sound artist Phill Niblock resonates around the stone walls. As director of the Experimental Intermedia centres in NYC and Ghent, as well as head of the XI label, Niblock was a central figure in the US and European avantgarde music scenes from the 1960s until his death in January 2024.
Organist Hampus Lindwall enjoyed a close relationship with Niblock. Unmounted/Muted Noun was commissioned for him by Musica Festival Strasbourg. In 2019 Lindvall recorded Niblock’s works for organ and tape in the presence of the composer. Here he reprises these monolithic pieces, packed with dense blocks of chords and ecstatic, high-register drones. Finishing off this year’s Ultima Festival, Niblock’s monumental works slow down time and heighten our awareness of its passing in the moment.
