When I See You. I See a Garden (Collective Sound)

As part of Maritea Dæhlin’s exhibition A-FI-SA. But it might not be tomorrow, Oslo Kunstforening presents a four-hour performance bringing together five performers and their voices, texts and sounds.
In When I See You. I See a Garden (Collective Sound), language shifts between meaning and pure sound. At times it is spoken, read or sung; at others, it dissolves into repetition, fragments, silence and processed sound.
How do we know where to go? Who do we belong to? Taking animal migration, diaspora, family histories and experiences of living between different places, languages and generations as points of departure, the performers work with texts that change over the course of the performance, disappearing and returning in new forms.
Maritea Dæhlin’s composition provides a structure for the performance while leaving space for each performer’s individual voice, presence and interpretation. Through repetition, attentive listening and sound design, their voices intertwine, shift and reappear in different forms, creating changing connections between language, sound, memory and distance.

- You are free to move in and out of the work, and are invited to take part in an ongoing search for direction, belonging and ways of finding your own path.
- The performance is part of A-FI-SA, Maritea Dæhlin's solo show at Oslo Kunstforening. The show explores generational memory, diasporic experience and belonging. Through video, analogue photographs and sound, Dæhlin looks at how the body, rituals and different landscapes can activate memory, play and possibilities for healing.
