Musicians often feel constrained by the conventions of different musical genres. This can make it hard for an artist to find their place in the established musical landscape.
This concert marks the end of a three-day workshop for vocalists convened by Sofia Jernberg. Known for her voice’s huge dynamic range and inclusive repertoire, Jernberg received a classical training, but she has spent many years expanding her vocal capacity in jazz, improvised, film, theatre and experimental music. Under her guidance, vocalists will embrace their desire to move beyond boundaries and carve out a musical space of their own.
Coming from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines, the participants in Freedom to Move will share and explore their experiences in solo and collective work. Emily Adomah is a singer and composer working within experimental contemporary music. Synnøve Brøndbo Plassen is a Spellemann-nominated folk singer coming from the music traditions of Folldal, Østerdalen and Trøndelag. Reshail Mansoor fuses raga with more modern styles. Kaia Rullestad Teigen has experience in musicals, theatre, opera, jazz, folk and pop. Nawar Alnaddaf uses improvisation and group playing to explore the microtonality in Arabic Maqam music and Western musical styles.
