Surging waves and love songs.
In Unchained Melody, Mette Ingvartsen uses love songs from different eras as a musical anchor for the choreography. The songs carry memory, longing and recognition, but also something larger: the idea of love as something that can shift relations, loosen boundaries and set bodies in motion.
The movements follow the logic of water. Ripples spread between the dancers, undercurrents pull them in new directions, and bodies are drawn into vortices before calm returns and the surface stills. The dancers sing as they move, in a physical practice where breath is put at stake: the voice shifts, the tone breaks, feeling takes on a body.
For Ingvartsen, love is more than a private emotion. It is also a social and political force, something that can wear down what is hard and loosen what once seemed fixed. Unchained Melody is a performance where song, atmosphere and movement flow into one another like waves across the sea.
