NODE / Brian Cliff Olguin for Ultima

The Norwegian Centre for Technology, Art, and Music (Notam) unveils a unique sound dome installation in the historic TV studios where Hotel Caesar was filmed, now home to The Norwegian Film School. Showcasing a mix of vintage electroacoustic works and newly commissioned pieces, the Notam-sound dome uses multichannel surround sound technology to provide a profoundly spatial and dynamic musical experience, enhancing auditory perception and interaction with the compositions. Thirty-two strategically placed speakers envelop listeners in a rich tapestry of sound, creating an immersive auditory experience.

Notam's Spatial Audio Salon includes new works by Tulle Ruth on the theme of environmental threat to the Sami reindeer herding grounds, and Ruth Wilhelmine Meyer on the hydrothermal vents under the Norwegian Sea. In Glass Eye, Natasha Barrett investigates the rise of surveillance technology and the stifling of protest. Composer and sound artist Signe Heinfelt delves into the auditory world of English folklore and fairy superstitions, intertwining myth with the natural soundscapes of South West England. The program includes as well a seminar on ecology in sound art, highlighting how non-anthropocentric perspectives are conveyed through artistic practice.

Ecology in Sound Art (seminar)

In sound art and music, there is a growing focus on the consequences of human activity on ecological systems, alongside an increasing willingness to listen to non-human perspectives in a way that challenges anthropocentrism. This panel discussion, featuring composers Tulle Ruth, Signe Heinfeldt, and Bjarne Kvinnsland, will explore these themes through the works presented in the concert following the seminar, which focus on listening to reindeer, elves, and whales, respectively. The conversation will be moderated by John Andrew Wilhite (Ph.D. candidate at NMH with the project Ecologies of Listening).
